"The Excursionist" is a film based on a true story of eleven-year-old girl from Lithuania. Having escaped from the freight train overfilled with deportees that was taking her and her family to Siberia, she covered 6,000 kilometres long, full of danger and adventures journey back home, to Lithuania.
On her way she met various people: poor Russian woman who lives in an abandoned village in the taiga, drunkard driver, train conductor, gang of robbers who had escaped from the labour camps, cruel doctor working in a children's camp, smitten plane pilot, member of the NKVD and NKVD soldiers who were hunting Lithuanian partisans... And all of them shortened the girl's trip to her Motherland, risking not only personal freedom, but also their lives. Some people she met demeaned her, some indifferently turned away and did not disturb her journey. Only a few of them agreed to help implementing her hope to return home to Lithuania. This is a film about hope and destiny, love and friendship, sacrifice and good heart, and immeasurable love for one's land, one's Motherland...
