Lithuania Will Be the Guest Country at the International Classic Film Market of Lumiere Film Festival
This autumn, the spotlight turns to the Lithuanian cinema at one of the major classic film events in the world, the Lumière Film Festival and the International Classic Film Market that accompanies it. From 15 to 18 October, in Lion, France, the Lithuanian Film Centre will present the film heritage of Lithuania, the guest country of this year.
On 16 October, the Classic Film Market will invite the participants to a discussion ‘Emerging vitality of the heritage sector in Lithuania’ to talk about the preservation and importance of the Lithuanian film heritage. The panel will include Lithuanian cinema experts: Aleksas Gilaitis (film archivist and the organiser of the Early Film Festival Pirmoji Banga), Dmitrij Gluščevskij (film curator and critic), Lina Kaminskaitė-Jančorienė (researcher of audiovisual media, curator of archival films and head of research at the Media Education and Research Centre Meno Avilys), Giedrė Simanauskaitė (project manager at the Lithuanian Film Centre) and Jonas Zagorskas (film restoration specialist). The discussion will be moderated by film historian and critic Ariel Schweizer.
In the evening, the participants will be shown two classic Lithuanian feature films at the Institut Lumière: Andrius by Algirdas Araminas, 1980, and Jausmai (Feelings) by Algirdas Dausa and Almantas Grikevičius, 1968. Andrius is also included in the Festival’s Treasures and curiosities programme with its screenings scheduled for 16 and 18 October.
Festival visitors will be able to enjoy the exhibition of the classic Lithuanian film posters during the Market and will be offered, for the entire month of October, an online access to classic Lithuanian film collections selected specifically for this Market.
Additionally, a shared stand of the Baltic countries will present film heritage collaborations between Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia during the event.
The International Lumière Film Festival and its Classic Film Market are an important platform aiming to highlight the film heritage of different countries and share it with international audiences. The Festival always includes multiple retrospectives and screenings of restored films, a programme for children as well as several themed programmes.
This participation forms a part of the Season of Lithuania in France 2024 project. On the Lithuanian side, the Season of Lithuania in France 2024 is organised by the Lithuanian Culture Institute under the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Embassy of Lithuania in France, with Virginija Vitkienė as the General Commissioner.
